Establishments providing alcohol have often been the source of documentary photography and for good reason: they have become markers to which changes in our society can be measured, for centuries the public house has been central to community life, they have been places where networks are created, strengthened and extended.

The pub, being a cultural and social hub, gives insights into UK history, heritage and changes taking place in society; they have been venues of celebration and to drown one’s sorrows.

Using documentary photography Paul Wicks has recorded public houses being lost due to lack of need by society. Enriched with archive photography and patron experience, this brief study illustrates the rich heritage East Kent is potentially losing; hinting at the changing social landscape and asking what has become of society and where will community go from here?
